We use
maintenance practices that are
organic (no poisons) and supported by
decades of
experience and scientific research.
Our basic philosophy is that the long term consequences of
any action are at least as important as the short term results. You
can read more about this at
What
do we mean when we say organic?
GENERAL MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE:
UNDER CONSTRUCTION.
SUMMER:
It is time to water:
The best time to water is before 9am in the morning. Make a date
of it-you and the hose! Start by giving all the perennials a good long
drink. You can be analytical and wisely use the time to study your
garden. What works, what would you like to change? Or
use the time to meditate on the wonder and infinite variety of the natural
world. Or just space out! When the perennials are watered, put
the hose on trickle, and water the trees and shrubs. Leave the hose at
the base of each for an hour or more.
This is a spectacular time in the garden if you like a riot of
color! Lilies, Hemerocallis, Campanula, Coreopsis, Scabiosa,
Coneflowers, Geraniums, shrub roses, Delphinium, Oakleaf Hydrangea,
Annabelle Hydrangea, Monarda, Balloonflower, Clematis, and Hosta bloom.
Lawns need less frequent mowing in late summer-it is too hot to grow a lot.
Organic lawns still look green, because their deeper roots allow
them to get enough water, but chemically dependent lawns are going
dormant. That browned out grass isn't dead, it is just
resting.
TO DO IN July &
August
Water wisely. Established
perennial gardens only need water in drought conditions. Trees and shrubs also need a drink when it is
this hot and dry.
Fight the good fight If you've kept on top of the
weeds, bask in the glory and enjoy your hard work. If the weeds
have won a few battles, stop them from spreading NOW by at least
collecting their seed heads BEFORE they let the seeds drop.
Enjoy the fruits of your hard work
This is peak bloom time in the garden-enjoy it. Plan a garden party
with all your friends! Or find a quiet, hidden corner and curl up
with a good book and something cool to drink. |
